The EU Green Deal aims to make Europe the first continent to zero its carbon emissions / become “carbon neutral” by 2050. Since it is planning about 30 years ahead, The European Union’s Carbon Neutral Continent long-term strategy is most relevant to today’s youth. Today’s youth encompass a large proportion of the decision-makers of the future.
However, although the young population between the ages of 18-30 constitutes a significant part of the society in many European countries, the number of seats in the national parliaments for young people is quite low compared to the total population.
In addition, according to Eurobarometer Youth Survey Data Annex 1, it has been determined that more than half of European youth do not understand the decisions of the European Union. Also, it can be reached from the data of the same survey that Europe’s youth show similarity based on governmental decisions and regional decisions in their countries. This shows us that young people have a huge representation problem, having trouble with political literacy, and indicates that they are far from decision-making mechanisms.
As it is emphasized European Union Youth Strategy young people have a need to make voices heard louder; and, youth’s problem of representation, the problem of understanding of political literacy and their access to decision-making mechanisms should be facilitated. The mentioned problems of youth should be solved so that the future decisions of the European Union can be understood, implemented, and sustained by the European youth.
The D.R.E.A.M.LAND project aims for helping youth to find these solutions. In a nutshell, the D.R.E.A.M.LAND project’s scope is to make the dreams of young people heard through the voices of young people and to create a space where young people can be encouraged with the necessary training to increase the youth’s understanding of political literacy and their participation in the decision-making process and civil society.
